Elongated and thin body fish, somewhat compressed. Large and retractable mouth. The body has a scaly, translucent appearance, with a greenish or bluish color and iridescent silver on the belly and sides. The maximum size is 20 cm. It is found in coastal and shallow waters, where it forms large banks. It feeds on zooplankton (copepods). It reproduces in spring and summer. It is a frequent species in the Atlantic from Denmark to Morocco.
