GURNARD
Chelidonichthys lucerna
.
With this name two species are known mainly, the Mud Mullet (Mullus barbatus) and the Rock Mullet (Mullus surmuletus). It is a semi-salty and saltwater fish. The mud mullet, as the name implies, is found in sand and mud bottoms, while the rock mullet is found in rock bottoms. Both are located at a depth of up to 120 meters.
It is normal to find it forming small groups, although it is possible to see separate individuals. Chins that have under the lower jaw use them as sensory organs for taste and touch. With them they remove the sand to look for food, swallowing it and expelling it later through the gill slits but staying with the small crustaceans, fish and worms from which it feeds.
