SUMMER SQUID

Illex illecebrosus

.

Marine mollusks belonging to the Cephalopoda class, sub-class Coleoidea, order Teuthida. With an appearance similar to squid, with which they are often confused. Its feeding is purely carnivorous, being constituted by pelagic fish, crustaceans and invertebrates in general. It inhabits the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea and the Pacific Ocean from almost superficial areas to a depth of at least 800 meters, during the night it tends to ascend to surface waters.

The potas have two gills, a closed circulatory system formed by a systemic heart and two gill hearts. The common pota is light pink with small violet or reddish and bluish spots, so it blends very well in seawater. When this animal feels attacked, it expels a very dark brown "ink" or sepia.
